Reading time is an estimate based on your selected words-per-minute rate. Word and sentence tokenization follows whitespace and common punctuation, not a language-specific editorial standard.

What This Calculator Does
The Word & Character Counter provides real-time text statistics including word count, character count (with and without spaces), sentence count, paragraph count, and an estimated reading time based on an adjustable words-per-minute speed.
How It Works
Text is parsed using Unicode whitespace patterns to isolate words. Sentences are counted using terminal punctuation markers (. ! ?), paragraphs are separated by newlines, and reading duration is calculated by dividing total words by the reading speed (defaulting to 238 words per minute).
Example
Pasting a 500-word essay reveals 3,150 characters with spaces, 2,650 characters without spaces, 24 sentences, 5 paragraphs, and an estimated reading time of 2.1 minutes at 238 WPM.
Formula
Words = Count of non-empty whitespace-separated tokensReading Minutes = Words / Reading Speed (WPM)Reading the Results
Words
Total count of individual words in the entered text.
Characters with spaces
Total byte length and typography count including all spaces, tabs, and line breaks.
Estimated reading time
Projected minutes required for an average adult to read the passage at the selected reading speed.
