What This Calculator Does

The Tile Calculator estimates the total number of tiles and full purchase boxes needed to cover a room or wall surface. Enter room square footage, individual tile dimensions in inches, a waste factor, and tiles per box to generate an accurate material estimate.

How It Works

Tile surface area is converted to square feet (length × width / 144). The order area applies the waste allowance percentage (typically 10% to 15% for cuts and breakage). Dividing the order area by tile coverage and rounding up gives total tiles, which is then divided by tiles per box and rounded up to full boxes.

Example

A 120 sq ft room using 12x12 inch tiles with a 10% waste allowance requires 132 sq ft of coverage. At 10 tiles per box, you need 132 individual tiles, which rounds up to 14 full boxes.

Formula

Tile Coverage Area
Tile Area (sq ft) = (Length in × Width in) / 144
Order Area with Waste
Order Area = Room Area × (1 + Waste % / 100)
Tile and Box Counts
Tiles = Ceil(Order Area / Tile Area); Boxes = Ceil(Tiles / Tiles per Box)

Reading the Results

Boxes to purchase

The minimum number of full manufacturer boxes required to fulfill the tile order including waste allowance.

Tiles required

The individual tile count needed to cover the designated area plus offcuts and breakage.

Tile coverage each

The net square footage covered by one single tile.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much tile waste should I calculate?

Standard grid layouts typically require 10% waste. Diagonal, herringbone, or complex room perimeters with many door cutouts require 15% to 20% waste.

Why do tile estimates round up to full boxes?

Retailers and distributors sell tile by the sealed box to protect edges from transit breakage and ensure matching dye lots.

Can I use this for wall tile and backsplashes?

Yes. Enter the total square footage of your wall, shower surround, or kitchen backsplash surface.
