Formula & assumptions

Trip formula
Formula
Litres = distance × consumption ÷ 100; Total = litres × price per litre; Cost per km = total ÷ distance. Return trips double the distance only.
Published fuel prices
Published data
Fuel prices come from the official DMPR schedule: pump prices for petrol, wholesale baselines for diesel, effective 7 October 2026 (verified 28 October 2026). Petrol prices are zone-based: inland vs coastal. DMPR Fuel Prices — effective 7 October 2026
Diesel caveat
Published data
Diesel forecourt prices are deregulated and vary by station — the schedule supplies a wholesale baseline, so the diesel estimate is a floor.
Your inputs
Your input
Trip distance, consumption (L/100km), and optionally your own price per litre. Enter real figures from your car and bill; nothing here assumes them for you.

Estimates are for trip planning only. Prices are never projected forward: the tool uses the last officially published schedule and will not claim rates before they exist.

What This Calculator Does

The South Africa Fuel Calculator estimates your trip fuel cost using the official DMPR-regulated petrol and diesel prices effective 7 October 2026. Select your province, pick your fuel type, enter the distance and your car consumption, and instantly see how many litres you need and what the trip will cost in Rand. Petrol prices are regulated pump prices; diesel figures are official wholesale baselines, and forecourt diesel prices vary by station.

How It Works

Choose your province to load the correct inland or coastal price. Enter trip distance and fuel consumption in litres per 100 kilometres. Litres needed equal distance multiplied by consumption and divided by 100, then multiplied by the price per litre to produce total cost and cost per kilometre.

Example

Johannesburg to Durban is 568 km. At 7.5 L/100km on 95 Unleaded (R30.25/L inland, effective 7 October 2026), you need 42.6 litres costing R1,288.65 total, or about R2.27 per kilometre.

Formula

Litres Needed
Litres = Distance x Consumption / 100
Total Cost
Cost = Litres x Price per Litre

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do South African fuel prices change?

The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) adjusts fuel prices on the first Wednesday of every month based on international oil prices, the rand/dollar exchange rate, transport costs, and local levies. The prices in this tool are effective 7 October 2026; the next scheduled adjustment is 4 November 2026 and was not yet published when the data was last verified on 28 October 2026.

Why are inland prices higher than coastal?

Inland prices include the cost of transporting fuel from coastal ports and refineries to inland regions. In the October 2026 schedule the inland petrol price is 87 cents per litre above the coastal price.

What is the difference between Diesel 50ppm and 500ppm?

Diesel 50ppm has lower sulphur content (50 parts per million) and is typically more expensive. It is required for newer engines with advanced emissions systems. The official DMPR diesel figures are wholesale baselines; forecourt diesel prices are deregulated and vary by station.

Are these prices official?

The petrol prices are the regulated retail prices published by the DMPR effective 7 October 2026. The diesel figures are that schedule’s wholesale baselines. Always confirm the price at the pump, which can differ for diesel and can change at any time.
