Order the lawn by the roll and the pallet.
Sod Calculator
Area = length x width; order area = area x (1 + waste); rolls = ceiling(order area / roll coverage).

What This Calculator Does
The Sod Calculator estimates the square footage of a lawn, adds a waste allowance, and converts it into rolls and pallets using your supplier coverage. It is built for a rectangular lawn; irregular yards need to be split into shapes and added together.
How It Works
Length times width gives the lawn area. The waste allowance covers cuts at edges, curves, and around beds and paths. That order area is divided by the square feet per roll and rounded up, then divided by the square feet per pallet and rounded up. Both coverage figures are inputs because sod rolls and pallets are not standardized across suppliers.
Example
A 50 ft by 30 ft lawn is 1,500 sq ft. With 5 percent waste the order area is 1,575 sq ft. At 10 sq ft per roll that is 158 rolls, and at 450 sq ft per pallet it is 4 pallets.

Area to order
Lawn area plus waste. The allowance covers edge trimming and unusable offcuts, not failed establishment.
Sod rolls
Rolls at your supplier coverage, rounded up. Confirm whether the supplier sells by the roll or the pallet, and whether a part pallet is available.
Pallets
Whole pallets at your coverage figure. Pallet counts vary by farm, grass type, and roll size, so treat this as a planning number rather than a quote.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many square feet are in a roll of sod?
Common rolls cover about 9-10 sq ft, but suppliers vary and some sell by the square yard. Check the actual coverage on the quote. The calculator lets you enter the real number so the roll count matches what will be delivered.
How much waste should I allow for sod?
Five percent is reasonable for a simple rectangle. Curves, beds, narrow strips, and many corners can push it to 10 percent. Ordering too little is worse than a small surplus because a second delivery may come from a different cut.
How soon should sod be installed after delivery?
As soon as possible, ideally the same day. Sod is a living plant and heats up in the roll. If installation is delayed, unroll it in shade, keep it moist, and do not stack rolls in direct sun. Follow the supplier instructions for the grass type.
Do I need topsoil under the sod?
The sod needs contact with prepared soil, not a dusting over hardpan or weeds. Till and amend the top 4-6 in, grade for drainage, and firm before laying. The sod calculator does not include soil, compost, or starter fertilizer.
Can I calculate an irregular lawn?
Yes, by splitting it into shapes. Use rectangles for the main areas, triangles for corner beds, and circles for curved sections, then add the results. Do not measure the bounding rectangle unless you are prepared to pay for sod you cannot use.
